What if my vehicle has multiple defects? Can I still file a Lemon Law claim?

It is not uncommon for lemon vehicles to have more than one defect. In fact, many defective vehicles will have multiple symptoms of a particular problem. For example, vehicles with faulty transmissions may leak transmission fluid, struggle to shift gears, overheat, burn, make strange noises or struggle to accelerate. Vehicles with faulty engines may experience stalling, oil leaks or other problems. Sometimes, a symptom of a lemon may point to more than one defective component.

You may ask “If my vehicle has multiple defects, can I still file a lemon law claim?” The answer is: if your vehicle has multiple defects, you may be eligible for a vehicle replacement or a lemon law buyback.

A defect under the California Lemon Law is a vehicle problem that substantially impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle. If one or more defects affects your vehicle’s ability to provide safe and reliable transportation, you may be entitled to relief under the California Lemon Law.

Keep track of all of your records. In particular, keep track of the repair orders. Organize them chronologically, and look at what’s recorded in each repair order. The repair orders should have the dates of the repair visits, the problems you reported to the technicians, and the repairs attempted on the vehicle.

If you can demonstrate that the auto manufacturer or its dealerships failed to repair your vehicle within a reasonable number of repair attempts, you may be able to prove that your vehicle is a lemon.
