Audi and Volkswagen Backup Camera Recall Issued

Volkswagen issued a recall of more than 41,000 VW Tiguan, Arteon and Audi Q3 vehicles because errors in the camera control units made the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

The rearview camera not displaying may increase the risk of a crash while the driver is operating the vehicle in REVERSE. Drivers will notice that there is no image on the display screen after putting the vehicle in REVERSE or pressing the parking assistance button.

However, the acoustic and visual warning (bar display) from the parking assistance system will still work as intended.

VW Backup Camera Recall: Quick Facts

  • NHTSA Campaign ID: 25V082000
  • VW and Audi Recall Numbers: 91NY and 90AV
  • Number of Affected Vehicles: 29,569 in the U.S.,1 11,834 in Canada2
  • Recalled Vehicles: 2022–2024 Volkswagen Tiguan, 2023 Volkswagen Arteon, and 2024–2025 Audi Q3
  • Vehicle Defect: Rearview camera image does not display as intended because an error may occur in the camera control unit at vehicle startup.
  • Defect Remedy: Volkswagen and Audi dealerships will update the camera control unit software to prevent errors at startup.

The first report of a backup camera image issue occurred near the end of 2023, after which Volkswagen informed the supplier to initiate an analysis and investigation. From January to May 2024, an analysis was conducted to discover the root cause and contributing factors of the backup camera failure. An analysis released in June 2024 indicated an issue with “boot loader of the control unit under certain voltage and temperature conditions.”3

Volkswagen’s investigation showed that most failures happened after “some level of exposure in the field to environmental conditions and/or driving behaviors,” but did not rule out the possibility of the issue showing up when the vehicles were first sold.

Starting January 2025, only control units with the updated software have been included in production. In February, Volkswagen and Audi issued a recall on the vehicles for backup camera issues.

Volkswagen and Audi recall notices are expected to be mailed April 11, 2025.4

Audi and VW Backup Camera Recall: Check Your Eligibility

If you are not sure whether your Volkswagen or Audi vehicle is covered by the recall, you can check your eligibility through one of two means:

  1. Use NHTSA’s “Check for Recalls” Search Tool and type in your Vehicle Identification Number or state License Plate Number.
  2. Call Volkswagen’s customer service department at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi’s customer service department at 1-800-253-2834 and ask if you qualify for recall repairs. You may have to supply your VIN to the customer service representative.

When the recall remedy becomes available, schedule an appointment with your Volkswagen or Audi dealership to get your vehicle repaired. At the end of your repair visit, collect your “work order” or “repair order” documents. These documents are essentially a receipt. They indicate the issue reported, the services performed and the costs associated with the repair. Under a recall, a repair should be compensated by the manufacturer.

If Your Audi or Volkswagen Cannot Be Fixed: Your Legal Rights
