Nissan Problems to Watch For
Auto manufacturers will sometimes release faulty cars, trucks, and other vehicles to the public. Nissan is no exception, which is why you may be able to bring forward a Nissan lawsuit. Owners of Nissan vehicles should look out for the following signs:
- Jerking, Shuddering and Shaking While Driving
- Gearshifts Locking Up
- Transmission Failure
- Air Bag Light Turns On
- Check Engine Light Turns On
- Loss Of Power
- Defective Throttle Body
- Engine Will Not Start
If these symptoms or any other defect covered by your warranty returns after repeated repairs, your Nissan may be a lemon. Learn more about what the lemon law can do for you.

Common Nissan Lemon Problems
Your Nissan may qualify for the California Lemon Law if a warranty problem that substantially impairs the car’s use, value or safety still isn’t fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts. Certain common problems, such as random braking, transmission issues and engine failure have prompted class action lawsuits, a federal engine investigation and recalls.
If your Nissan experiences these serious safety issues, contact one of our lemon law attorneys to talk about your case.
Nissan Automatic Emergency Braking Problems
Nissan vehicles are allegedly prone to random braking caused by defects in their automatic emergency braking systems.
The automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems use radars and sensors to detect objects, and if a crash is otherwise about to happen, the AEB systems automatically hit the brakes.
However, a class action lawsuit claimed that the AEB systems in some Nissan Altima, Kicks, Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles, among them 2020 and 2021 models, would give false alarms for objects that aren’t actually there or make the vehicles brake at random. The court has since closed that case, and it ended without a class settlement.
Nissan has also sent its dealers repair bulletins for false activation or unexpected braking of the AEB system in certain 2020 to 2024 models of the following vehicles:
Nissan Altima
Nissan Sentra
Nissan Murano
Nissan Kicks
Nissan Frontier
Nissan Titan
If your Nissan brakes at random and your dealership hasn’t remedied the issue, the California Lemon Law may give you the right to a buyback or a replacement vehicle.
Nissan Transmission Problems
Nissan CVT Transmission Problems
Common Nissan lemon symptoms such as jerking, shuddering and transmission failure have been named in various class action lawsuits.
Newer Nissan models have needed repairs to their continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). Nissan has told its dealers how to repair CVT judder and vibration in some 2020 to 2022 Kicks and Versa models. It also recalled certain 2024 and 2025 Sentra vehicles because a front driveshaft may not be fully seated in the CVT, which can cause a fluid leak and a loss of drive power.
Our Nissan lemon law firm has seen CVT transmission problems like severe juddering, stalling, vibrating, slipping, failure to accelerate, sudden stops and transmission failure in 2020 to 2024 Nissan Altima, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Rogue, Sentra and Versa vehicles with a CVT.
Nissan 9-Speed Transmission Problems
A class action Nissan lawsuit alleged that 9-speed automatic transmissions installed in 2020–2021 Nissan Titan and Nissan Frontier trucks had recurring problems such as hesitation, vehicle jerking, lurching and shifting problems. It claimed this made the trucks more likely to be involved in a collision, and that their inability to maintain speed put pedestrians in danger. Owners also alleged that the offered software update didn’t fix the transmission problems.
That lawsuit has since ended without a class settlement.
Nissan also recalled certain Titan and Frontier trucks with 9-speed transmissions because the parking pawl may not engage when the truck is shifted into park, which can let it roll away. Nissan’s dealer bulletins on hesitation and shift shock in some of these trucks tell technicians to check that this recall was done first.
If your Nissan Titan or Frontier has recurring transmission issues that haven’t been fixed, you may qualify for a vehicle replacement or a lemon law buyback.
Nissan Engine Problems
Owners of certain Nissan Rogue, Nissan Altima and Infiniti QX50 vehicles reported experiencing engine failure, a loss of motive power and metal chunks being found in the oil pan. Problems with the VC-Turbo engines prompted a federal engine defect investigation, which closed once Nissan recalled vehicles with these engines because the engine bearings may fail. Nissan later added more vehicles, and the recalls now cover:
2021–2025 Nissan Rogue
2020 Nissan Altima
2020–2022 Infiniti QX50
2022 Infiniti QX55
Nissan also recalled certain Rogue vehicles with the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine because gears in the electronic throttle body may break.
Metal chunks, loss of power and engine failure can make your Nissan unsafe to drive. If your Nissan dealership hasn’t fixed your issues within a reasonable number of repair attempts, contact our Nissan lemon law attorneys to discuss your options.
