How To Document Your Jeep Lemon Law Case
If you experience a recurring issue with your Jeep, start taking notes on when it’s popped up and what you’ve done to fix it. Keep records of your repair attempts, including when you took your Jeep in, how many times you’ve had to, and how many total days it’s been in the shop, as these are key criteria for a California Lemon Law claim.
Save any invoices, receipts, and written communications from your dealership or maintenance provider. If possible, take photographs of the defective components or features. Also, gather any information you have on your Jeep’s manufacturer’s warranty, as you’ll need to file a claim within a year of its expiration date.
Recent Jeep Recalls and Their Lemon Law Implications
Certain Jeep models from the past five years have been recalled for defective features or safety issues. Examples of significant recent Jeep recalls include:
- 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee models were recently recalled for a series of issues, including the potential to shift out of park without braking, which created serious rollaway risks.
- More than 338,000 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles were recalled for a defect that could cause the steering wheel to separate from the column while driving.
- Chrysler recalled more than 150,000 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles for battery failures that could cause fires. Some affected vehicles were previously recalled for the same issue.
- Some 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler models would fail to notify drivers when their tire pressure was low, leading to a recall of nearly 80,000 vehicles.
- More than 120,000 2023-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles were affected by a recall for faulty seat head restraints that posed a safety hazard to backseat passengers in the event of a crash.
- Nearly 33,000 2020-2024 Jeep Gladiator and 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler models were recalled for a circuit issue that could cause their instrument panel to fail.
- Almost 80,000 2024 Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L models were recalled for a software defect in their rearview cameras.
- A variety of 2023-2024 Chrysler models, including multiple Jeep models, were recalled for faulty airbags.
A recall for an unfixable defect can strengthen your Jeep lemon law claim, giving you a better chance at recovering compensation for your vehicle.
Top ’20–’25 Jeep Problems
Jeep issues that affect the use, value, or safety of your vehicle can indicate a manufacturing defect if they cannot be repaired within a reasonable number of attempts during the warranty period. Some Jeep defects are more common than others. If you have a recent model year Jeep, look out for these common issues:
- Braking and FCW problems: Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles have Forward Collision Warning systems that do not trigger the automatic brakes when they should. Cherokee and Grand Cherokee owners report nearly getting into crashes.
- Electrical problems: Jeep 4xe vehicles have been recently recalled for battery issues and fire risks. Other Jeep electrical issues include rearview cameras not working.
- Engine problems: The Jeep Compass and other vehicles experience Jeep “High Coolant” warnings. Other Jeep engine issues include oil guzzling, engine stalling, hesitation, and shutdowns, particularly in Jeep eTorque engines.
- Transmission problems: Delayed acceleration, lunging, harsh gear shifting and loss of power are common in recent model year Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Renegade SUVs.
- Rollaway issues: Certain Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles have seen recalls because gearshift design, loss of power, or loss of parking functionality results in the SUVs rolling backward.
- Steering problems: 2021–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles have been recalled because the steering knuckle can separate and reduce driver control over the steering.
Your Jeep dealership should be able to repair your vehicle under warranty within a reasonable number of attempts. If your Jeep continues to have issues, get a free consultation from our lemon law attorneys to discuss your legal options.
Settlement Options and What To Expect
If you have a valid claim under the California Lemon Law, Jeep must compensate you for your defective vehicle in one of three ways:
- Replacement: You can exchange your lemon for a comparable replacement vehicle from Jeep.
- Cash compensation: You can choose to keep your lemon and receive a monetary settlement.
- Buyback: Jeep can repurchase your lemon for its full cost, including your down payment, monthly payments, and any fees and taxes you’ve paid, minus a deduction for the number of miles you’ve driven the vehicle.
The timeline for a Jeep lemon law claim can depend on the strength of your case and the company’s willingness to cooperate, among other factors. Our experienced California Lemon Law attorneys can help you build a valid claim and maximize your compensation by pursuing additional civil penalties.
