Dodge, Ram Recall Nearly 220K Vehicles For Rearview Camera Issues

Dodge Journey and Ram ProMaster vehicles are being recalled for rearview camera image problems.

Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 220,000 Dodge Journey and Ram ProMaster vehicles due to rearview camera displays that fail to show proper footage during a backup event.

Dodge and Ram drivers may notice a blank, black, blue or inverted screen instead of a rearview camera image. Failure of rearview camera displays violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 571.111, which dictate rearview visibility in motor vehicles while in reverse.

According to Fiat Chrysler, a microprocessor solder can crack due to thermal fatigue (strains from repeated temperature changes), leading to blank images. The loss of rearview camera images can increase the risk of a crash while driving in reverse.

Dodge/Ram Backup Camera Recall Background

In February 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration first opened an investigation into 2018–2020 Dodge Journey vehicles after uncovering 26 incidents of backup camera issues involving black screens, upside down images, flashing images, and blurred images.

In May 2024, Fiat Chrysler submitted its response, which revealed an increase in claims beginning July 2019. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed the warranty data and found that the introduction of a new camera part number caused the warranty claims in 2019–2020 Journeys to be nearly double the claims for 2017–2018 models.

In February 2025, NHTSA’s ODI presented these findings to FCA. For the next three months, FCA’s US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TRSC) reviewed the change history of vehicle parts related to the issue and met with the relevant suppliers.

On May 22, 2025, FCA’s TRSC began to investigate 2019‒2020 Dodge Journey and 2019‒2021 Ram ProMaster vehicles for loss of backup camera image issues. It reviewed warranty data, field records, and customer assistance records over the course of a month. In July 2025, FCA determined that certain vehicles experiencing the backup camera issue had a vehicle build issue. In August, FCA determined that the rearview camera defect could potentially affect the entire vehicle population.

After FCA submitted its recall report to federal regulators, NHTSA closed its investigation.
