Nissan Radar Sensor False Alarms: What You Should Know

Many Nissan models from the 2020 model year on come equipped with safety systems meant for detecting obstacles and preventing crashes. These safety systems include emergency braking systems, which allow for the detection of obstacles and automatic use of the brakes if drivers fail to press the brakes in time. However, some of these vehicles may experience problems with the radar sensors, which are responsible for giving these systems information about the vehicle’s outside environment.

Nissan Radar Sensors FAQ

A radar sensor that warns about obstacles that are not there makes every warning harder to trust. Start with what the problem is, then check whether your Nissan is on the list.

What Are the Nissan Radar Sensor Problems?

Multiple class action lawsuits alleged that some Nissan vehicles have faulty radar sensors, including the 2020 Rogue and 2020–2021 Altima, Kicks and Rogue Sport models. As of October 2026, the main class action over these radar sensors has closed without a class settlement, and no certified class of owners exists.

These radar sensors are supposed to help detect objects close to the Nissan vehicle. This detection is supposed to help prevent collisions because it helps the safety system warn drivers about obstacles and potential crashes. However, some of these radar sensors allegedly detect non-existent obstacles and fail to detect actual obstacles.

As of October 2026, owners have filed more than 650 complaints with NHTSA about the forward collision avoidance system on 2020 and newer Nissan models. NHTSA’s records show no investigation or recall on that system for those model years.

Which Nissan Vehicles Are Affected by the Radar Sensor Defect?

To our knowledge, many 2020 and newer Nissan vehicles equipped with radar sensors can be affected by this radar sensor defect.

In particular, Nissan has told dealers how to fix false activation or unexpected braking by the emergency braking system on some 2020–2024 Altima, Sentra, Kicks, Frontier and Murano vehicles, most recently in January 2026. The fix includes reprogramming the driver-assistance control unit where needed.

Nissan has also given dealers bulletins for front radar “blocked” warnings and driving aids that stop working on many 2020–2024 models, including the Rogue, Kicks, Versa, Armada and Leaf, with a separate fix for Rogue sensors blocked by snow or ice. A radar software fix covers some 2024–2025 Rogue vehicles whose forward driving aids shut off while driving. In April 2026, Nissan added a radar reprogram for some Pathfinder vehicles whose front radar stops working.

Can I Still Pursue a California Lemon Law Claim Against Nissan?

Yes, if your vehicle qualifies. No certified class exists in the Nissan radar sensor lawsuit, so there is nothing to opt out of before you pursue a California lemon law claim against Nissan.

The California Lemon Law states that your vehicle is considered a “lemon” if there is a defect covered by the warranty that substantially impairs the vehicle’s use, safety or value, and that the manufacturer or its authorized repair facility in California cannot fix within a reasonable number of attempts. The number considered “reasonable” is determined on a case-by-case basis.

The California Lemon Law allows people who buy or lease a new vehicle in California with the manufacturer’s warranty to take legal action against auto manufacturers. As long as the statute of limitations hasn’t run out for you, you can pursue a California lemon law claim.

Do I Need to Opt Out of the Nissan Radar Sensor Class Action?

No. The Nissan radar sensor class action has closed, so you do not need to opt out to take an individual lemon law case against Nissan. There is no opt-out deadline, but a California lemon law claim has its own deadline to file.

With an individual case, you may pursue claims more specific to your situation. Contact a California lemon law attorney about your individual right to pursue a lemon law claim.

Lemon Law Help works only in California. We help California residents who bought or leased a defective model year 2020 or newer vehicle from a licensed California dealer. We cannot help people outside California, unless they are active-duty military.
