2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Issues and Problems

Brake issues in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee have prompted multiple forum threads on the subject and an investigation into a potential Forward Collision Warning defect lawsuit. While service brake issues were not yet the most commonly reported complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee brake issues are increasingly discussed on Jeep-related and general discussion forums.

If your 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has brake issues that your dealership cannot repair within the warranty period, your Grand Cherokee may have a manufacturing defect. Owners and lessees of defective vehicles can recover cash compensation, a replacement vehicle or a repurchase of their vehicle and certain expenses under the California Lemon Law. We recommend that you consult a Jeep lemon law attorney to discuss your Jeep brake issues and uncover your legal options.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Issues and Complaints

Braking issues reported in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee complaints include:

  • FCW automatic brakes not working
  • Pulsing brake pedal
  • Brake pedal won’t respond or is hard to depress
  • Brake force is inconsistent

Owners of 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokees submitted these complaints to NHTSA and various complaint and discussion boards.

“Advanced brake assist / emergency assist issue – while highway driving, during a sunny day and with no cars for at least 1 mile the system engaged the emergency brake as if it detected an imminent accident. This was at highway speeds so caused some commotion in the car. Once safely stopped in a rest area, I turned off that system. The next day the active lane management system stated it needed service, but that later went away. Moreover when the brake pedal is depressed the pedal pulses, leading me to believe the rotors are warped. This SUV only has 3300 miles on it. It is scheduled to go to the dealership next week.”

“The brake force will jump suddenly and fall back when the brake pedal is even maintained at a constant level while the vehicle is being braked to a stop or decelerating. This malfunctioning will lead to imprecise control of the distance to the front vehicle. Engine Wobbling when it is fully stopped with ‘D’ gear engaged, especially when the transmission temperature comes up after a few hours of driving. It can be clearly felt that the entire vehicle is bouncing with the engine. Engine misfires when crawling after a cold start. Engine speed will fall suddenly and then back up. The vehicle will shake badly, which can cause improper reaction and improper operation of the vehicle speed. The passenger seat squeezes the center console on the right side and the plastic panel comes off, which exposes a sharp edge to the passenger’s lower body. After the dealer’s inspection, there is no obvious cause for this defect, passenger and center console are all in their places. The rear quarter window on the passenger side water leak. Metal rattling noise from the left front side (driver side) of the cabin when the vehicle is running on a bumpy road, especially in hot weather. Noise comes from the rear left suspension when the vehicle is decelerating.”

“Three weeks ago my jeeps brakes failed while I was driving. I was approaching an intersection so I was fortunately already traveling at a very low speed to begin but when I pushed the brakes they were not stopping the car. I quickly released and pushed again and the brake pedal became extremely hard as it would be if the vehicle were not running. The car continued to move forward and I swerved into the left hand lane to barely avoid hitting a car that was in front of me in the middle lane. My jeep continued to go forward in the left turn lane and the whole time I am pushing on the brakes as hard as I possibly can and now knowing for sure that my jeep isn’t going to stop. I hit the back of an 18 wheeler which was the only vehicle in that turn lane stopped at the red light and this brought my jeep to a complete stop. This was so terrifying. I cannot even put into words how horrific this feeling was. There was nowhere to go to avoid collision and coast to a stop. If the 18 wheeler had not been stopped at the light I would have rolled into the intersection and possibly been in a major collision. I had both of my children in the car with me and this was not a place on the road where I could stay safely in the vehicle. I put the car into park and then back into drive and this seemed to reset everything.”

FCW Defect Lawsuit Includes 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

A Jeep defect lawsuit investigation is looking into complaints of FCW dashboard warnings, faulty crash sensors, and failure to brake automatically in 2021–2024 Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles.4

Forward Collision Warning systems, or FCW systems, are systems intended to prevent crashes by using radars, sensors and sometimes cameras to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. If the system detects that a crash is otherwise about to happen, it will provide visual and audio warnings to the driver. If the driver does not respond in time, the automatic brake will activate and slow or stop the vehicle.

However, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have been reporting that their FCW’s automatic brake is not activating when needed or is sometimes activating randomly.

Below are just a few of the Jeep Grand Cherokee automatic braking complaints:

“Today was the second time the AEB engaged while I was driving for no apparent reason. The first was in Nov 2023 while driving on the interstate at about 70 mph. The AEB engaged, slamming the car to an almost stop, alarm blared for a moment and then the car continued operating with no apparent codes or warning lights. Today it did it again while traveling about 30 mph. I was slowing down to turn into a drive. I was still headed straight with no cars around and the AEB engaged, slamming the car to a full stop, with the alarm and the dash flashing something in red. The car then drove off fine with no warning lights or indicators on the dash. I cannot reproduce the AEB response. In response to the first occurrence, the dealer flashed the software last year. I intend to take it in tomorrow for the reoccurrence. I believe it to be a safety issue not only in that my back hurts terribly from the whiplash of a stop as sudden as hitting a wall, but because had there been a car behind me on either occasion, it is almost certain they would have had to make a dramatic and dangerous swerve to avoid it or rear ended me.”

“Driving down a road at 50mph during daylight hours. It was sprinkling and vehicle was in electric mode. There were no cars in front of me, or behind me at the time. While my foot was on the accelerator, there was a loss of power then collision warning engaged out of nowhere with the audible beeps, flashing on the instrument cluster, and sharp braking. The incident was brief, but certainly a safety hazard as there were no indications the automated emergency braking was going to occur.”

“Shortly after purchasing the vehicle I engaged the adaptive cruise control. It worked fine until such time as I attempted to pass a large vehicle such as a semi truck. When I would get along side of the truck the brakes violently slammed on without warning. The vehicle has been taken back to the selling dealer for repair and they were not able to fix it. (see uploaded Repair Order). I then called Jeep Customer Care who then sent me to another dealer for a second opinion. This dealer attempted repairs twice, both without success. When I took it back again a dealership employee rode with me and took a video of what happens when passing a truck with the adaptive cruise engaged. This dealer now has it for the third time and so far the vehicle has been there for about 9 days with no indication of any progress. Even if they “fix” it I am not confident of the safety of the vehicle as it would be very easy to be hit in the rear end by a following vehicle should this happen again.”

Has 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Recall Been Issued?

There has been no brake recall for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. So far, 17 recalls have been issued for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle, including for the Jeep 4xe electric vehicles.8

Model year 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee recalls include:

  • Jeep 4xe battery fire recall – 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe owners have been warned to park outside and away from structures.
  • Front seat side airbags do not deploy – The seat side air bags may not deploy due to an improperly secured connector.
  • Jeep rearview camera recall – Over a million vehicles, including the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, were recalled because radio software may cause rearview camera failures.
  • Rearview camera images do not display – In a separate recall, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles may not have the rearview camera image displaying due to an improperly connected coaxial cable.
  • Wheels fall off – The steering knuckle and upper control arm ball joint may separate and allow the wheel to fall outward.
  • Defrosting/Defogging system stops working – The defrosting and defogging system stops working due to an error in the hybrid control processor software.
  • Rearview camera not displaying – The Central Vision Park Assist Module software may prevent the rearview image from displaying.
  • Rear coil springs incorrectly installed – Rear coil springs may detach while driving. These coil springs are an important part of your Jeep’s suspension system.
  • Engine shutdowns – The 2L PHEV engines may shut down due to a loss of communication between the transmission control module and hybrid control processor.
  • Loss of steering control – The intermediate shaft of the sterling column may disconnect from the u-joint.
  • Missing airbag warning label – Airbag warning label is missing from the dashboard. This fails federal standards regarding occupant crash protection.
  • Damaged tail lights don’t light up – The tail light side marker cannot illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Hazard lights may flash while braking – While this recall is related to the brakes, the recall repair is made to the body control module.
  • Loss of drive power – The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve in 3.6L engines may stick open. The EGR is responsible for reducing NOx emissions by recirculating some of the engine’s exhaust back to the engine to be burned off.
  • Turn signal failure – A software programming error prevents turn signal failure from being communicated to the driver.
  • Child seat safety – The child seat tether may separate from the seat frame due to a missing weld.
  • Difficulty steering – The steering gear rack bar was not manufactured with the specified hardness, allowing it to yield and bind within the steering rack.

A Jeep ABS recall has been issued for model year 2018–2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. However, a brake recall for later model years has not yet been issued.

If you are not sure whether your 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is part of an existing recall, use NHTSA’s “Check For Recalls” tool and search for your vehicle’s existing recalls through your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or your license plate number.
