Jeep 4xe Engine Recall Follows 36 Fires, 3 Injuries

A Jeep Wrangler headlight is off. Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles are being recalled for fires and loss of propulsion.

You are holding the newest notice about your Jeep 4xe, and you are reading it against the last one, because the two do not agree. One was about where to park. This one is about what is inside the engine.

You bought the plug-in hybrid because it was supposed to be the advanced version of the Wrangler or the Grand Cherokee, the one you charged in your own driveway and drove to work on electricity. What has actually defined owning it is a manufacturer that keeps revising the instructions for living with the vehicle.

None of that is your doing, and none of it is a reason to shrug and wait for the next envelope. The record those letters have built is worth more than most owners realize.

The Sand Left Inside Jeep 4xe Engines

The two liter turbocharged engine in these hybrids is cast at a foundry, and casting uses sand to shape the metal before it cools. On a run of engines built between the middle of 2023 and early 2025 at a supplier plant in Mexico, that sand was never fully cleaned out of the block.

Sand trapped inside an engine does not sit still. It breaks loose, travels with the oil, and wears down bearings and other internal parts until the engine knocks, loses power, or catches fire.

Stellantis has tied 36 fires and three injuries to this contamination, along with 50 separate reports of a vehicle losing drive power outright. Roughly 118,000 Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe hybrids are covered.

Those are not the Jeep 4xe fires most owners had already been reading about, and that overlap is a large part of why the mail became so hard to follow.

What Each New Jeep 4xe Notice Asked You to Give Up

Start with what you were sold. A 4xe is a vehicle you plug in at home overnight, in your own garage, and that habit is most of what makes the hybrid worth what it costs over the gas model.

The battery side of this took that back in pieces. Word came that the high voltage pack could short internally and burn, and owners were told to park outside, away from the house and away from anything else that could catch.

Then came the instruction not to charge at all until the vehicle had been repaired, because a full pack burns more readily than a depleted one. Read plainly, that meant the plug-in hybrid you paid extra for was to be driven as a gas vehicle and left on the street for an open ended stretch of time.

The repair moved as well. The early remedy was a software update meant to watch the battery for early signs of trouble, and after fires kept occurring on vehicles that had already received it, the answer shifted to inspecting and replacing hardware.

Each 4xe recall notice asked for something different, and what every one of them quietly asked for was your confidence in the vehicle. Then the engine letter arrived and asked for patience, because there was no repair to schedule yet.

The Repair Stellantis Landed On for the 4xe Engine

Interim letters went out at the end of December 2025 and said, in substance, that the company knew what was wrong and did not yet have a fix. Owners kept driving vehicles they had just been told might have foundry debris circulating through the engine.

The remedy that followed has two halves. A dealer loads updated engine control software, then inspects the engine and replaces the block or the whole engine where contamination is found. All of it is free of charge.

The second round of owner letters began in May 2026, with more to follow as parts reach dealers, so coverage is moving in phases rather than all at once. As of August 2026 that is still how it is running.

A new engine plus new software is a genuine repair rather than a monitoring patch, which is the first thing on this list that actually addresses the defect. Whether it holds is a separate question, and the answer so far is complicated. Your vehicle identification number typed into the federal recall database will show every notice currently open on your Jeep, which beats assuming the mail kept up with you.

What Jeep 4xe Owners Are Finding After the Engine Swap

In the spring of 2026 the story turned once more. The Mopar Jeep 4xe engine recall covered 2,689 replacement engines, the very units being shipped out as the remedy, because they may carry the same casting sand as the engines they were built to replace.

Only a small share of that batch is believed to be affected, and Stellantis has reported no fires from it. Dealers are inspecting those engines and replacing them where the contamination shows up.

For an owner who waited months to get a new engine, that arithmetic is still grim. The fix for the defect produced its own notice about the fix.

The rest of what owners describe never appears in a recall letter at all. Weeks without the vehicle, loaner cars that are not what you bought, a plug-in hybrid running on gasoline for a year, and a resale conversation that now comes with a history attached. Our California lemon law guide takes up the counting of repair opportunities and what a buyback actually returns to an owner.

California Lemon Law and a Jeep 4xe You Cannot Plan Around

The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act carries a standard that fits this pattern more closely than owners tend to assume. What it weighs is how much a warranted defect has taken out of the vehicle you actually paid for, with a fire risk sitting at the heavy end of that scale.

That lands hard on a 4xe for a reason the paperwork itself makes plain. Stellantis wrote to you once to say it knew what was wrong and had no repair, then wrote again months later to schedule one.

So add up what these notices have actually cost you. Months of parking on the street, a charging routine you were told to abandon, an engine replaced and then called into question, and days or weeks with the vehicle at a dealership while parts were located.

A recall that keeps being revised is not a shield for the manufacturer. It is documentation, written by the company itself, that the vehicle was not right and that nobody was certain yet what would make it right.

Our page on Jeep lemon law claims covers what owners of these vehicles most often run into once they start asking.

If your own service history needs a second reader, Lemon Law Help will go through it with you at no cost. Bring the notices along with the repair orders, because on this vehicle the mail is half the record.

Timing rules turn on the specifics of your vehicle and when the trouble was first reported, so this is worth an actual review rather than a guess.

Somewhere in your kitchen there is a stack of mail this one vehicle has generated. Put the envelopes in date order and read straight down the pile.

Park it away from the house. Stop charging it. Come in for a software load.

Come back for an engine, then come back again about the engine you were given. Read in that order, on those dates, the pile is the vehicle you have owned.
