Nissan Issues Recall Of Hybrids Due To Vehicle Stalling

Vehicle stalling caused by Nissan’s hybrid power control module (HPCM) has caused a recall of more than 7,600 model year 2014–2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, 2015–2016 Nissan Murano Hybrid and 2014–2017 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles.

Model year 2014–2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, 2015–2016 Nissan Murano Hybrid and 2014–2017 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles were recalled due to risks of vehicle stalling. The vehicle stalling is potentially caused by power shutdowns, on which Nissan received reports in March. When hybrid vehicles in China experienced engine stalling and power shutdowns, Nissan engineers investigated the problem.

From April 2021 to July 2021, Nissan engineers investigated the operation of the motors and the continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). They also investigated the failsafe mode activation of the HPCM. They learned that the HPCM failsafe mode could disable drive power to the engine and electric motor in the event of bearing damage.

From August 2021 to September 2021, Nissan conducted a safety assessment of the failsafe mode to assess what happens when the hybrid powertrain shuts down. The HPCM failsafe mode may result in reduced power steering assist, reduced brake assist, and vehicle stalling.

The vehicle may also stall if both the engine and electric motor are disabled.

Nissan found 35 warranty claims related to Nissan hybrid vehicle stalling in the United States.

The recall affects the following vehicles built during these periods, with hybrid powertrains built at the Canton and Smyrna plants:

  • 2015–2016 Nissan Murano Hybrid, built August 22, 2014, to July 19, 2016
  • 2014–2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, built July 18, 2013, to June 21, 2014
  • 2014–2017 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid, built July 18, 2013, to August 4, 2017

Nissan hybrid recall notices will be mailed December 3, 2021. Dealers will reprogram the HPCM software.
