More than 2.5 million Honda and Acura vehicles are recalled for faulty DENSO fuel pumps that may cause engine non-starting and stalling while driving.
The fuel pump impellers experience surface cracking that allow for excessive fuel absorption, which allow the impellers to deform over time, strike the body of the fuel pump, and render the fuel pump inoperable. These pumps were molded incorrectly, resulting in a low density impeller. The surface cracking occurs when these fuel pump impellers are exposed to production solvent drying for longer periods of time.
Signs of these defective DENSO fuel pumps in Honda and Acura vehicles include the illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), an intermittent loss of power, difficulty starting and vehicle stalling while driving.
The recall includes 2,539,902 of the following vehicles with DENSO fuel pumps:
- 2018–2020 Honda Accord
- 2017–2020 Honda Accord Hybrid
- 2018–2020 Honda Civic 4D

As of December 12, 2023, Honda has had 4,042 warranty claims related to the faulty DENSO fuel pumps. According to a Honda press release, there are not enough replacement components to repair all affected vehicles at once, so vehicle owners will be notified in stages.
Honda plans to start notifying affected drivers on February 5, 2024, according to Honda’s Safety Recall Report. Affected Honda and Acura will receive replacement fuel pumps with greater density impellers and expanded clearance between the impeller and the fuel pump body.
