A recall for 750,114 Honda and Acura vehicles states that faults in the front passenger seat weight sensors may cause the airbags to deploy when they should be restrained.
Front passenger seat weight sensors detect the weight of the passenger in the front seat. If the person is of a certain weight, airbags are intended to deploy in the event of a crash. However, if the passenger is too light, airbags deploying may cause them further injury. Airbags are typically held back if the passenger is a child, an infant in a child seat, or a small adult.
However, front passenger seat weight sensors in recalled Honda and Acura cars may crack and short circuit, allowing the frontal and knee airbags to deploy during crashes when they should be restrained Affected drivers may notice an SRS warning light illuminated and the passenger airbag indicator may remain off.
The Honda and Acura airbag recall includes the following vehicles:

- 2020-2022 Acura RDX
- 2020-2021 Acura TLX
- 2020-2022 Honda Accord
- 2020-2021 Honda Accord Hybrid
- 2020-2022 Honda Civic
- 2021 Honda Civic Type-R
- 2020-2021 Honda CR-V
- 2020-2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid
- 2020-2022 Honda Fit
- 2020-2022 Honda HR-V
- 2021 Honda Insight
- 2020-2022 Honda Odyssey
- 2020-2021 Honda Passport
- 2020-2022 Honda Pilot
- 2020-2021 Honda Ridgeline
According to a Safety Recall Report, a natural disaster at a manufacturing plant caused a supplier to temporarily change base materials for the components, even though the materials weren’t sufficiently verified for its intended use. As a result, additional strain led to internal short circuits.
As of January 25, 2024, Honda had 3,834 warranty claims. Honda first received a warranty claim on August 20, 2020, and continued to investigate the issue as further warranty claims came in.
Recall notices are expected to be mailed March 18, 2024. Honda and Acura dealers will replace the seat weight sensors. The new seat weight sensors have printed circuit boards built with the original, verified base material.
