Jeep Power Steering Pumps Investigated For Fires

Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks are under investigation for engine compartment fires apparently caused by electrical connectors.

An estimated 781,459 model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler and 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator may experience underhood fires while the vehicles are in an ignition OFF state. According to investigation documents, the fires are suspected to come from the passenger front side of the engine apartment, specifically at the power steering pump electrical connector.

The National Highway Traffic Security Administration received nine Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaire reports, one Death and Injury report and multiple field reports of engine compartment fires. The ignition “OFF” vehicle fires often occurred with little to no warning, posing a risk of injury, death and property damage.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened a preliminary evaluation to determine the cause, scope and frequency of the Jeep Power Steering pump defect. The results of the investigation will determine if the 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles are recalled.

Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles of previous model years have been recalled for fire risks. Several 2020 Jeep Wrangler SUVs were recalled because they experienced a risk of fires and fuel links. Later, a clutch pressure plate recall was issued for 2018–2021 Jeep Wranglers and 2020–2021 Jeep Gladiators due to a fire risk.
