A Ford rear brake line recall may be needed, but that will not come without an incoming investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation.
According to an ODI resume, this investigation affects potentially 368,309 model year 2015-2017 Ford Edge vehicles at risk of losing braking ability due to rear brake hose failures. At the time of the investigation, the ODI received 36 complaints alleging a loss of braking ability. They typically claim that the braking issue occurs without any prior warning and causes an increase in stopping distance.
In other words, it takes longer for the vehicle to stop after the driver depresses the brakes. Some Ford Edge owners also claim they have had previous brake repairs, some for the same issue in the front brakes.
Ford Edge Front Brake Recall
Ford had issued a recall of approximately 488,594 model year 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. According to the recall, issued as early as 2020, the front brake hoses may rupture prematurely and allow brake fluid to leak.
Ford had issued an interim recall notice on September 21, 2020, informing owners of the brake issue. Once the replacement parts became available, Ford issued follow-up recall notices on May 13, 2021. The replacement front brake hoses were made with a revised braid material.
Ford Edge Rear Brake Line Ruptures and Leaks
Many Ford Edge complaints referenced the previous recall on Ford front brake hoses, claiming that a similar recall needs to be issued for rupturing rear brake hoses and brake fluid leaks.

“Had brake calipers replaced 3 weeks ago. Picked up the vehicle and the brake pedal was going to the floor. Dealer said there was air in the line. Get the vehicle back and 2 weeks later I am driving. I apply the brakes and the pedal goes to the floor and my vehicle barely stops. Almost hit the person in front of me. The warning light for Low Brake Fluid Comes on. I am told by the Dealer that the rubber brake line was leaking somewhere. Ford says that my vehicle is not a part of the recall on the Ford rubber hose issue. How is this not the same issue!”

“Driver side rear flexible brake hose ruptured, passenger side flexible brake hose was bulging and ready to rupture. Drove vehicle approximately 2 -3 miles before the brake system warning light cluster illuminated and loss of braking power occurred. Safety recall Notice 20S42/NHTSA Recall 20V-469 (May 2021) issued for front brake lines. However, this appears that the rear lines should have been included as well. This vehicle has less than 84,000 miles on it”

“In 2020, Ford issued a recall of 2015-2018 Ford Edges due to a FRONT brake jounce hoses that could rupture. Ford Reference Recall #20S42. Today, the REAR brake hoses ruptured, which caused a progressive brake fluid leak; which caused the brake fluid warning indicator light to illuminate. This caused a reduction in the rate of deceleration, and having to tow the vehicle to a Ford dealership for repair. Concerned that the same issue with the front hoses has now affected the REAR brake hoses.”

“On 03/16/2018, my wife noticed her brakes were not working correctly. The brake pedal would go straight to the floor and she had trouble getting the car to stop. She called and said the warning for low brake fluid came on as well. When she arrived home I noticed the rear driver side brake line was leaking. The car had to be towed. The dealership tried to say my wife ran something over but the location behind the rear shock does not allow any room for debris to hit the brake line. We’ve already had the front brake line rupture before the recall on the front brake lines. We had to pay out of our pocket without reimbursement and now we are going to pay for the rear brake line to be replaced. This is an extremely dangerous issue with ford brake lines that needs to be addressed. Luckily my wife was driving in town at slower speeds cause this could have been fatal. There has been no inspection on the component except from the dealership mechanic after the rupture. Currently my wife’s vehicle sits at the dealership waiting for repairs.”
