Certain Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra crew cab trucks are under recall because the roof-rail airbag inflator may rupture or have the end cap detach, allowing compressed gas to escape and cause injury.
These roof-rail airbag inflators are located on the left and right sides above
the headliner.
The GM truck airbag recall* includes the following models:
- 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2018–2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
- 2018–2019 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
- 2018–2019 GMC Sierra 2500
- 2018–2019 GMC Sierra 3500
*Silverado and Sierra regular cab and double cab trucks are not included in the recall.
The manufacturer of the airbag inflators is Joyson Safety Systems, which had purchased Takata after the airbag crisis. If the sidewall ruptures or the end cap separates from the inflator, compressed gas will escape. Loosened or detach components will get propelled into the vehicle and potentially injure anyone inside. General Motors has not found the root cause behind the airbag inflator issue, according to recall documents.
In August 2024, General Motors learned of four roof-rail airbag ruptures and launched an investigation. The same day that it had learned of the four initial reports, GM learned of an alleged rupture in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The inflator had apparently ruptured when the Silverado was parked, according to photograph evidence.
In October 2024, General Motors decided to conduct a recall.
GM truck airbag recall notices are to be mailed November 25, 2024. Chevrolet and GMC dealers will replace the left and right side roof-rail airbag inflator modules.
