In the latest in the Takata airbag saga, a recall has been issued for more than 4,500 model year 2002–2006 Nissan Sentra cars equipped with Takata passenger airbags that previously have been inspected.
The Takata airbag inflators were not replaced in 3,930 Nissan Sentra cars in the United States and 656 cars in Canada.
Those Takata airbag inflators are at risk of exploding in collisions, even minor ones.
Takata airbags can explode upon impact, sending shrapnel throughout the vehicle cabin and injuring or killing drivers and passengers in the process.
The Takata airbag crisis was so costly and deadly that the auto parts supplier eventually declared bankruptcy.
The recall is expected to begin January 5, 2021, after which Nissan dealers will replace the Takata airbag inflators.
