Ford Recalls 290,000+ Super Duty Diesel Trucks For Fuel Pump Failures

Ford has recalled more than 290,000 Super Duty trucks at risk of fuel pump failure because biodiesel deposits can wear down pump components and cause a loss of motive power.

The high pressure fuel pumps had aged biodiesel deposits due to fuel sitting for extended periods of time during the COVID shutdowns. Ford truck drivers may experience an extended crank while starting or notice an illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL) and reduced engine power.

The Ford truck high pressure fuel pump recall covers the following vehicles:

  • 2020–2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty
  • 2020–2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty
  • 2020–2022 Ford F-450 Super Duty
  • 2020–2022 Ford F-550 Super Duty
  • 2020–2022 Ford F-600 Super Duty
  • 2021–2022 Ford F-650
  • 2021–2022 Ford F-750

Ford’s fuel pump failures can lead to vehicle stalling and increase the risk of a rear-end collision. Ford is aware of at least 3,070 warranty reports, 498 field reports and 58 customer service reports associated with the fuel pump failures.1

If your 2020-2022 Ford F-Series diesel truck is listed in this recall, keep a lookout for a recall notice in your mailbox and contact Ford’s customer service department to schedule a repair visit.

  • Vehicle Defect: High pressure fuel pumps may fail due to worn down pump components and metal debris in the fuel system.
  • Cause of Defect: Aged biodiesel deposits may form on the pump drivetrain roller and in the tappet body cooling passages.
  • Defect Remedy: Ford and Lincoln dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software to increase pump cooling and prevent formation of aged biodiesel deposits.

In September 2021, an engineering team noticed an increase in warranty reports for high pressure fuel pump failures in Super Duty and medium-sized trucks with 6.7L Scorpion diesel engines. Specifically, the team noticed an increase in warranty rates for trucks with the Bosch CP4 RP7 diesel fuel pumps.2

The RP7 high pressure fuel pumps, which were introduced in 2020 Super Duty and 2021 medium-sized trucks, had experienced aged biodiesel deposits due to fuel sitting during the pandemic shutdowns.

In August 2021, the RP7 fuel pump was replaced with the RP8 high pressure fuel pump during production. The RP8 high pressure fuel pump has increased clearances in the roller shoe and tappet body to allow for better fuel flow. This allows for increased cooling in the tappet area to prevent the build-up of biodiesel deposits.

In December 2021, NHTSA informed Ford that other manufacturers issued recalls on vehicle models with Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pumps. In January 2022, Ford responded to NHTSA and said it would continue monitoring the performance of vehicles with these pumps. From February 2022 onward, Ford continued to investigate data regarding the failed pumps and concluded that aged biodiesel deposits were responsible for fuel pump failures.

Ford fuel pump recall notices are expected to be mailed out on January 13, 2025.3 If you have a 2020-2022 Ford Super Duty truck, look out for a mailed notice in your inbox around that time.
