Ford diesel fuel leaks have prompted an investigation into 210,960 model year 2015–2021 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks with 6.7-L diesel engines.
So far, the Office of Defect Investigation has received 27 complaints alleging diesel fuel leaks, 12 of which describe crashes and/or engine compartment fires, and three of which describe four injuries. The ODI is the investigative arm of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a government agency focused on transportation safety.
The ODI attributes the Ford diesel fuel leaks to fractures in the secondary fuel filter housing. The secondary fuel filter is close enough to high heat sources that it creates a possibility for autoignition thermal events and fires. The filters were manufactured by Allevard Sogefi USA.
After contacting Ford and Sogefi, the ODI learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to 7 Bar during the manufacturing process. Similar complaints dropped off on model year 2022 and newer vehicles, coinciding with changes implemented by Ford and Sogefi in 2022.
The ODI opened a Preliminary Evaluation to determine the severity of the Ford diesel fuel leak issue. Whether a recall will be issued depends on the results of the ODI’s investigation.
