Federal authorities are investigating General Motors airbag failures after receiving reports of severe crashes where airbags failed to deploy, resulting in injuries.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it received 15 complaints reporting six severe crashes during which the airbags failed to activate. According to this agency, all six incidents caused injuries and involved “significant frontal collision damage” to the vehicles.
The investigation includes nearly 750,000 of the following 2020–2021 vehicles:
• Chevrolet Silverado
• Chevrolet Tahoe
• Chevrolet Suburban
• GMC Sierra
• GMC Yukon
• GMC Yukon XL
• Cadillac Escalade
• Cadillac Escalade ESV
• Cadillac CT4
• Cadillac CT5
• Cadillac XT4
General Motors issued a technical service bulletin in March about illuminated airbag warning lights and certain diagnostic trouble codes. This TSB told dealers that the illuminated airbag warning lights are caused by rust particles in the connection terminal interface of the inflator. When the light flashes, the airbag deactivates.
The agency said that the investigation will reveal the severity and scale of the airbag problems and determine if the automaker should issue a recall.
