The brake fluid lights in certain Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles may fail to display thanks to faults in GM’s electronic brake control module (eBCM), prompting a recall of approximately 4490,671 GM vehicles.
The eBCM Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac recall includes the following vehicles:
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2023 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2023–2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2023–2024 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2023–2024 GMC Yukon
- 2023–2024 GMC Yukon XL
- 2023–2024 Cadillac Escalade
- 2023–2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV
The eBCM Chevy recall documents attribute the brake fluid light issue to a mismatch between the eBCM software and eBCM calibrations. Though drivers will sometimes see the red brake telltale light illuminate on their dashboards, this brake fluid light may not trigger until the vehicle’s brake pedal performance has degraded for some time. When brake fluid leaks and brake performance worsens, the stopping distance increases until it no longer complies with federal guidelines.
Sometimes, the eBCM will fail to display a warning light entirely.
A GM engineer performed a forced brake fluid leak test on an affected vehicle model. After observing that the brake fluid light did not illuminate, the engineer submitted the issue to GM’s internal team. GM opened an investigation in April 2024 and found that a mismatch in the eBCM software and eBCM calibrations released to vehicles at the assembly plant causes the system to fail to detect brake fluid leaks.
Affected Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac owners will be mailed eBCM recall notices starting October 28, 2024. Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac dealers will offer software updates to the eBCM. Vehicle owners who accept the terms and conditions of over-the-air technology will receive OTA software updates.
