A Ford Nano EcoBoost engine recall has been initiated after federal regulators completed an expanded investigation into Ford EcoBoost engine failures.
Ford is recalling more than 90,000 Ford F-150, Bronco, Edge, Explorer, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with a 2.7-L or 3-L Nano EcoBoost engine. The EcoBoost engine’s intake valves may break while driving, leading to engine failure or a loss of drive power.
The Ford Nano EcoBoost engine recall includes more than 90,000 of these vehicles:
- 2021-2022 Ford Bronco
- 2021-2022 Ford F-150
- 2021-2022 Ford Edge
- 2021-2022 Ford Explorer
- 2021-2022 Lincoln Nautilus
- 2021-2022 Lincoln Aviator
Ford Nano EcoBoost Engine History
According to the Ford EcoBoost probes, the vehicles experienced catastrophic engine failure, resulting in a loss of motive power in a variety of driving conditions. These vehicles would often have no ability to restart, leaving drivers stranded and dependent on a tow truck.
According to the defect investigations, the intake valves were made out of an alloy called “Silchrome Lite,” which can become hard and brittle if exposed to too much heat during manufacture.
Prior to the Ford EcoBoost engine investigations, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received three different safety defect petitions. All three defect petitions pertained to the 2021 Ford Bronco, which had already experienced catastrophic engine failure many times. Ford Bronco owners reported being left stranded, narrowly escaping severe car crashes and waiting for help for hours.
The initial investigation, opened July 2022, only covered 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles equipped with 2.7-L EcoBoost Nano engines. At the time, Ford had been aware of 110 consumer complaints, 125 warranty claims and 136 engine exchanges related to 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles. The estimated population of these vehicles was more than 700,000 vehicles.
The investigation, upgraded and expanded in October 2023, included 2022 Ford Bronco vehicles, 2021-2022 Ford F-150, Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus vehicles.
Ford Nano EcoBoost Recall Remedy
Ford and Lincoln owners should expect a mailed recall notice to their address as early as October 7, 2024. Ford and Lincoln dealers will perform an engine cycle test.
If the Ford or Lincoln vehicles do not meet the engine cycle threshold, dealers will accumulate high revolutions per minute (RPMs) engine cycles as part of a service procedure. If the Ford or Lincoln vehicles do not pass the engine cycle accumulation, the Ford EcoBoost Nano engines will be replaced. The replacement engines will have different intake valves.
