A Honda fuel pump recall for certain Honda Accord, CR-V and Civic vehicles was requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because the high-pressure fuel pumps may crack and leak fuel.
The Honda pump recall, issued in October, was issued because fuel leaks may increase the risk of vehicle fires. As of October 7, 2024, Honda is aware of at least 145 warranty claims related to leaking fuel pumps and fuel odors in the Honda vehicles.1
Honda Fuel Pump Recall: Affected Vehicles
The Honda high-pressure fuel pump recall covers an estimated 720,810 the following vehicles:
- 2023–2024 Honda Accord
- 2023–2024 Honda Accord Hybrid
- 2023–2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid
- 2025 Honda Civic
- 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid
If you own any of these Honda vehicles (gasoline or hybrid), use NHTSA’s “Check For Recalls” tool and search your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if this recall covers your vehicle.
Honda Fuel Pump Recall: Quick Facts
- NHTSA Safety Issue ID: 24V763000
- Honda Recall Number: PJW
- Number Of Vehicles: 720,810
- Issue: Cracks can form in the solenoid core component of the fuel pump. This allows fuel leaks to happen in lower mileage vehicles while the fuel pump is in operation.
- Cause: Improper production of the solenoid core components allow cracks to happen. Excessive thrust load and torque input during manufacturing and lower baking temperatures after plating can contribute to fuel pump cracks.
- Remedy: Honda dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the high-pressure fuel pumps. The solenoid core components in the new pumps were made with improved manufacturing processes.
- Safety Concern: If fuel leaks near an ignition source, drivers and passengers are at an increased risk of fires, crashes and injuries.
Cracks already present in the fuel pumps could grow when the vehicles are in use. Fuel odors may be detected while the vehicle is idling or being driven.2
According to the NHTSA entry3, recall notices are expected to be mailed December 4, 2024.
Honda Fuel Pump Recall Contact Information
Owners of affected vehicles can contact Honda’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or the National Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
You may contact your manufacturer’s customer service department or local dealership to see if you qualify for a recall-related repair.
What Causes The Honda Fuel Pumps to Crack?
Two errors in the manufacturing process make Honda’s fuel pumps vulnerable to cracking.
Firstly, excessive thrust load and torque input occurs during manufacturing cause the fuel pumps to suffer longitudinal and transverse cracking. Secondly, the baking temperatures were too low after the plating of the solenoid core component was applied. This resulted in hydrogen embrittlement cracks to form due to residual hydrogen remaining in the material.
Honda Fuel Pump Recall Timeline
Honda first received a warranty claim on the cracked fuel pumps in February 2023. A month later, it received a market quality report and started investigating the issue. In April 2023, Honda escalated the investigation with the supplier.
In August 2024, the fuel pump supplier improved the production processes and component dimensions of the high-pressure fuel pump’s solenoid core component. These improved high-pressure fuel pumps became part of vehicle production beginning around September 5, 2024. That same month, Honda stopped vehicle shipment of affected vehicle models.
Honda planned to notify its dealers of the recall on or around October 15, 2024. Honda expects to start mailing Honda fuel pump recall notices on December 4, 2024. The replacement pumps will have improved manufacturing processes for the solenoid core components.
Honda Fuel Pump Odors Persist? Here’s What To Do
If fuel odors are plaguing your Honda gasoline or hybrid vehicle, check if it is under any recent recalls by using NHTSA’s recall search tool. You can search by vehicle year, make and model, or you can type in your vehicle’s VIN to see if any open recalls apply to you.
Alternatively, you can contact Honda’s customer service department to check for any existing recalls. If no recalls cover your vehicle, yet it experiences recurring issues, schedule an appointment with your local dealership anyway. You can also inquire about any existing warranties on your vehicle and whether they cover the issues you are currently experiencing.
During or after the repair visit, collect any documents provided to you by the dealership or technician. These documents, known as “work orders” or “repair orders,” will show the services performed on your vehicle, the date, time and mileage at which the repair visit occurred, what concerns you reported to the dealership and any associated costs.
If your Honda vehicle issues are not resolved with reasonable repair attempts, explore your legal options via a free consultation with a lemon law attorney. Under California’s lemon law, a vehicle may be legally considered defective if a manufacturing issue has not been resolved to conform to warranty within a reasonable number of repair attempts.
If your vehicle is found to be defective, you can win back approximately the total amount paid or payable to your vehicle, depending on if you bought or leased it. Extra damages will depend on the facts of your case, particularly if the manufacturer was found to have willfully violated your lemon law rights. Learn how lemon law vehicle repurchases are calculated.
Here are examples of possible lemon law settlements you could win for your vehicle, depending on the facts of your case.
Vehicle Model | Estimated Settlement Range |
2023-2024 Honda Accord | $27,295-$83,685 |
2023–2024 Honda Accord Hybrid | $31,345-$116,670 |
2023–2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid | $32,400-$103,950 |
2025 Honda Civic | $24,250-$72,750 |
2025 Honda Civic Hybrid | $28,750-$86,250 |
Please keep in mind that these figures are not guaranteed. They are estimates based on MSRP values of these vehicle models. The higher range is estimated on the possibility of civil penalties and does not apply to every lemon law case.
