Another Chevrolet Bolt battery fire recall has been issued for previously recalled 2020-2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV vehicles.
The advanced software meant to detect defective battery modules was incorrectly installed because the technicians may not have followed the right module reprogramming sequence. As a result, the software was unable to detect when the battery modules needed replacing, allowing for battery fires in 72 Bolts in the United States and 12 in Canada.
Chevy Bolt owners are warned to take the following steps in the meantime.
“Set the Target Charge Level feature in their vehicle to limit the charge level to 90%, charge their vehicle more frequently, avoid depleting the battery to 70 miles range remaining, park outside after charging, and do not charge the vehicle indoors overnight,” General Motors said in recall documents.
General Motors found out about the issue in March 2024 after internal reporting revealed that GM’s service software system could allow a technician to process a warranty claim after performing an incomplete or incorrect installation of the diagnostic software meant to detect defective battery modules.
In April 2024, GM analyzed service records and identified which vehicles had the diagnostic software incorrectly installed. On June 20, 2024, GM decided to issue a safety recall for the 84 vehicles with the diagnostic software issue.
Chevrolet battery fire recall notices will be mailed August 5, 2024. GM dealers will reinstall the advanced diagnostic software to prevent further battery fires.
